This original Aboriginal artwork by Athena Nangala Granites depicts Napaljarri-warnu Jukurrpa, also known as Seven Sisters Dreaming.
Seven Sisters Dreaming is an important Warlpiri story connected to ancestral women, stars, journeys and Country. Athena’s interpretation has a highly contemporary feel, while still carrying cultural knowledge and Dreaming stories passed down through family.
Athena Nangala Granites is a Warlpiri artist from Yuendumu in the Northern Territory. She began painting with Warlukurlangu Artists in 2010 and is a fourth-generation painter, with a strong family connection to the art centre through artists including her mother Geraldine Napangardi Granites and grandmother Alma Nungarrayi Granites. Her modern interpretation of Seven Sisters Dreaming is known for its distinctive, almost celestial style.
This 46 x 46cm artwork is a beautiful gift-friendly size, making it a thoughtful choice for birthdays, farewells, thank you gifts, corporate gifts, weddings or other special occasions. It is an original piece of Australian Aboriginal art, but still compact enough to frame, display and send within Australia or overseas.
Currently available at our Balmain store, this original Aboriginal artwork is a lovely choice for anyone looking to buy Aboriginal art in Sydney with a strong Dreaming story, a unique contemporary feel and connection to Country. It is supplied unstretched and rolled, making it easier to frame, display or send within Australia or internationally.
This artwork comes from Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumu, Central Australia. Established in 1985, it is one of the longest running Aboriginal-owned art centres and operates as a 100% Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit organisation.
More than 600 artists from Yuendumu, Nyirripi and surrounding communities contribute their work. Warlukurlangu is renowned for its colourful acrylic paintings and limited-edition prints, which have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
The name “Warlukurlangu” means “belonging to fire” in the Warlpiri language. The centre exists to maintain and share Indigenous culture, support artists, and pass traditions to future generations.
