A beautiful Australian made scarf perfect for all seasons.
The aboriginal design on the linen scarf is based on artwork by Pius Tipungwuti from Jilamara Arts & Crafts Association in the Tiwi Islands.
Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association is an incorporated non-profit, Tiwi governed organisation that was established in 1989. Jilamara is in the remote aboriginal community of Milikapiti, overlooking the Arafura Sea, on the north coast of Melville Island, the larger of two Islands that make up the Tiwi Islands.
Jilamara artists are renowned for producing innovative contemporary works based on traditional ceremonial body painting designs, clan totems and Tiwi creation stories. Artists work from a palette of natural ochres to produce paintings on linen, canvas, paper, printmaking, weaving, bark & carved wood.
Pius Tipungwuti has a long history working as an artist at Jilamara Arts and Crafts. He remains a strong leader in governance being an early influence in the development of the art centre and has held the positions of President, Public Officer and Treasurer. His tutini (pukumani poles) can be found around the world from the Muluwurri Museum in Milikapiti, to the Darwin Airport, Singapore’s Botanical Gardens and as far away as Amsterdam where he travelled to complete a commission in the late 2000s.
