Aboriginal art for sale at Bits of Australia.

This stunning artwork is by Marjorie Nampijinpa Brown from Yuendumu in Central Australia. Marjorie is a Warlpiri artist who currently paints with the Aboriginal owned Art centre, Warlukurlangu.

Her powerful and colourful paintings are painted in acrylic on canvas, depicting the traditional stories of her country.

This painting is based on the Dreaming -Ngapa Jukurrpa (Water Dreaming) - Puyurru. The story of this Dreaming is detailed on the Certificate of Authenticity that comes with the painting.

Jukurrpa is translated as ‘Dreaming’ or ‘Dreamtime’ and exists in Aboriginal desert law as the creation period. During the Jukurrpa, ancestral beings in both human and animal form moved across the desert singing, marrying and fighting – or tricking and helping one another. As they travelled, they created the features of the land, its waters, plants and animals, and people, languages and ceremonies. They also established the moral, practical and spiritual laws that still govern Aboriginal societies.

How The Art Is Sourced

This artwork comes from Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumu, Central Australia. Established in 1985, it is one of the longest running Aboriginal-owned art centres and operates as a 100% Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit organisation.

More than 600 artists from Yuendumu, Nyirripi and surrounding communities contribute their work. Warlukurlangu is renowned for its colourful acrylic paintings and limited-edition prints, which have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

The name “Warlukurlangu” means “belonging to fire” in the Warlpiri language. The centre exists to maintain and share Indigenous culture, support artists, and pass traditions to future generations.
