This original artwork is by Indigenous Artist Charlene Napanangka Marshall from Nyrippiri in the Northern Territory.
Grace Napangardi Woods was born on May 1973 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community approximately 290km north-west from Alice Springs in the Central Desert of Australia. She has lived primarily in Yuendumu for her entire life, though spends much time with family in Alice Springs and in Nyirripi.
Grace’s father is a Warlpiri man from Yuendumu and her mother is Arrente from Alice Springs. Her grandfather Gerhard Inkamala was a watercolour painter and a founder of the Hermannsburg School. She has 4 children and several grandchildren. As a proud cultural woman Grace enjoys taking part in cultural activities, women’s business and dancing.
Buying Aboriginal art helps to support Indigenous artists in many ways. Not only does it provide a source of income for the artist but it is also a way to keep traditional culture alive and to share this culture with the younger generations.
This artwork comes from Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumu, Central Australia. Established in 1985, it is one of the longest running Aboriginal-owned art centres and operates as a 100% Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit organisation.
More than 600 artists from Yuendumu, Nyirripi and surrounding communities contribute their work. Warlukurlangu is renowned for its colourful acrylic paintings and limited-edition prints, which have been exhibited nationally and internationally.
The name “Warlukurlangu” means “belonging to fire” in the Warlpiri language. The centre exists to maintain and share Indigenous culture, support artists, and pass traditions to future generations.
