The painting is titled Wardapi Jukurrpa (Goanna Dreaming) by Melissa Napangardi Williams at Warlukurlangu artists.
Melissa was born in Allice Springs and grew up in Yuendumu where she became a full-time carer, looking after her own children as well as her niece and nephews. In 2004 she started painting full-time with the Warlukurlangu art centre, painting her mother and father's Dreamings which have been passed down through many generations. The Goanna Dreaming story in this painting was told to her by her mother. Melissa enjoys using an unrestricted palette to create a modeern interpretation of her culture whilst using traditional motifs.
Established in 1985 Warlukurlangu is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings and limited edition prints. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world.
