This acrylic painting is titled Yuparli Jukurrpa (Bush Banana Dreaming) and it was painted by Aboriginal artist Marita Napanangka Marshall.
Marita was born in 1990 in Yuendumu, a Northern Territory community where the Warlukurlangu art centre is located. In her youth she attended a boarding school for Indigenous students from remote communities but once she finished school in 2008 she returned home to her family at Yuendumu and worked for the community development project there whilst painting with the Warlukurlangu art centre. Marita says that she loves to paint with lots of colour and does not restrict herself with her use of this. She paints Dreamings which have been passed down to her from her father, and have been communicated in this way through many generations for millennia.
Established in 1985 Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings and limited edition prints. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world.
Sale of this artwork directly benefits the artist and the Warlukurlangu Artist community. Every painting is accompanied by a signed and dated Certificate of Authenticity which tells the story relating to the painting and some information about the artist.
