This colourful painting was created by Aboriginal artist Mekeisha Napanangka Martin for the Warlukurlangu Art Centre. It's titled 'Ngapa Jukurrpa', which translates to 'Water Dreaming'.
Mekeisha Napanangka Martin was born in 1999 in Alice Springs. She speaks Warlpiri and lives in Nyirripi, a remote community about 160 south west of Yuendumu where the Warlukurlangu Artists Corporation is based. The site of this painting is located to the west of Yuendumu, where two ancestral Jangala men, the rainmakers, sang to unleash a giant storm which travelled across the country, filling water holes and forming hills and rock formations using lightning and clouds.
Established in 1985 Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings and limited edition prints. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world.
