This colourful painting is titled Ngatijirri Jukurrpa (Budgerigar Dreaming) and it was painted by Aboriginal artist Anne Grace Nungarrayi Kitson at the Warlukurlangu art centre. The site of the Dreaming depicted here is at Yangarnmpi, south of Yuendumu where Anne paints. Indigenous men would hunt for Ngatijirri nests, looking for eggs and juvenile birds which are considered delicacies. They would also use their boomerangs to hung for adult birds in flight. Traditional iconography is used in Anne's artwork, with cross-shaped patterns representing the footprints of the large flocks of birds as they traveled across the land.
Established in 1985 Warlukurlangu is a not-for-profit organisation that is 100% Aboriginal-owned by its artists from the remote desert communities of Yuendumu and Nyirripi in Central Australia. Warlukurlangu Artists is famous for its gloriously colourful acrylic paintings and limited edition prints. The art centre has a national and international profile and its art has been featured in hundreds of exhibitions and publications in Australia and around the world.
