This 46 x 30cm canvas is an original Indigenous artwork from Central Australia by Justinna Napaljarri Sims. Delivered rolled up you can choose how and when you want to display it.

Justinna was born in 1977 in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km north-west from Alice Springs. She went to school at Yirara College (Alice Springs) but returned to the community in 1999 where she has lived permanently ever since. Justinna is the daughter of Elsie Napanangka Granites, a well-known artist, and the grand-daughter of Paddy Japaljarri Sims (Deceased), one of the founding artists of Warlukurlangu Artists Art Association, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu.

She has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists since 1999, however it wasn't until 2010 that she began to paint full-time. She paints many of her grandfather's Jukurrpa stories, Dreamings, which include Ngarlkirdi Jukurrpa (Witchetty Grub Dreaming) and Yanjirlpirri Jukurrpa (Star or Seven Sisters Dreaming). These relate directly to her land, its features and animals. She uses traditional iconography, while developing a contemporary individualistic style to depict her traditional Jukurrpa.

How The Art Is Sourced

This artwork comes from Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation in Yuendumu, Central Australia. Established in 1985, it is one of the longest running Aboriginal-owned art centres and operates as a 100% Aboriginal-owned, not-for-profit organisation.

More than 600 artists from Yuendumu, Nyirripi and surrounding communities contribute their work. Warlukurlangu is renowned for its colourful acrylic paintings and limited-edition prints, which have been exhibited nationally and internationally.

The name “Warlukurlangu” means “belonging to fire” in the Warlpiri language. The centre exists to maintain and share Indigenous culture, support artists, and pass traditions to future generations.
